This position is responsible for leadership of the Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation (APPTI), a non-profit organization. APPTI identifies opportunities and priorities for advanced manufacturing technologies for the industry, promotes collaborative R&D programs funded in part by government sources, and informs government offices, universities, research institutions, and companies about the technology needs and opportunities of the industry and their potential for benefits. The Executive Director leads the organization to achieve progress in these areas and serves as chief executive officer in managing the organization.
The Executive Director is a full-time position that reports to the APPTI Board of Directors. The Executive Director is hired by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), which is based in Washington, DC, as an AF&PA employee with AF&PA employee benefits and is leased to APPTI, which pays all expenses for the position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Lead the identification and communication of industry technology needs and R&D priorities with emphasis on transformational approaches.
Capture full set of industry technology needs and opportunities in roadmap reports and summaries.
Drive consensus among members on top priorities for R&D programs.
Communicate R&D priorities broadly to industry stakeholders.
Promote collaborative R&D programs funded in part by government.
Work to develop and communicate technology challenges for priority areas.
Maintain awareness of relevant government funding opportunities and encourage applications for R&D funding to address technology challenges.
Encourage project proposals developed with members and stakeholders that include technical work plans and business cases.
Attract funding for industry-related research and development programs, from industry and government sources.
Issue RFPs for industry funded programs
Manage APPTI research programs funded by APPTI members
Provide technology voice about industry needs and opportunities.
Communicate R&D priorities broadly to government offices, research institutions, industry groups including AF&PA and TAPPI, and companies in the United States and around the world.
Work with government offices in the U.S. to influence scope and content of future R&D programs and upcoming funding opportunities.
Participate in government, university, and industry events, workshops, and activities globally to increase awareness of needs, opportunities, and potential benefits.
Serve as technical resource to government offices, contractors, and non-profits about the industry’s needs and opportunities.
Lead APPTI as its executive officer.
Articulate and pursue the organizational vision with stakeholders and members.
Work closely with Board of Directors on directions, goals, plans, etc.
Manage the organization.
Recruit new members and encourage retention of existing members.
Attract funds to sustain the organization’s activities.
Handle administrative tasks – budget, expenses, invoices, AF&PA services, consultants, contractors, etc. Note: APPTI does not have an in-house staff; however, the Executive Director oversees contracted services and consultant agreements, and serves as a lead on projects across multiple organizations.
This position can be performed remotely. The Executive Director will be provided an office in Washington, DC, USA, and is expected to be in Washington with sufficient frequency to be effective in the position. A budget will be set for travel to Washington and expenses will be reimbursed.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Effective leadership and interpersonal skills demonstrated in past employment and experience.

Demonstrated ability to cultivate and manage high-quality stakeholder relationships in the scientific community, academia, government agencies, and the forest products industry.

Knowledge and Experience:
Working knowledge of continuous manufacturing processes (pulp and paper industry experience preferred) and relevant disciplines in science and engineering.
Work experience in a continuous process manufacturing industry.
Good business acumen; experience with P&L management.
Familiarity with the federal government’s grant process is a plus.
Ability to work effectively with international programs and collaborations.
Experience with U.S. government agencies involved with funding R&D programs and working knowledge of budget processes and funding mechanisms.
Proven knowledge of public and collaborative technology development programs around the world related to the forest products industry.
Recent experience and current relationships with key industry technical organizations and research institutions.
Strong analytic skills to readily grasp, distill, and communicate complex scientific and technical issues, and the ability to clearly understand and convey their implications for the industry and APPTI.
Willingness to travel to interact with stakeholders and to sell the mission of APPTI.
Demonstrated performance in handling administrative tasks.
Good understanding of organizational administrative requirements.
Degree in a scientific or technical discipline, preferably in a discipline relevant to the pulp and paper manufacturing industry including paper science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering.
10+ years’ work experience in pulp and paper, chemical, or related industry or relevant government experience with demonstration of successful performance and career advancement.
5+ years of leadership and/or management experience with budget responsibility.
