Note: We are currently recruiting to fill one Climate and Resiliency Engineer position at the II or III level. If you are interested in applying at either level, you will need to apply to the separate, concurrent recruitment being conducted for that level.
Requirement: To be considered as qualified for the II level position, possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training issued by the State of California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is required at time of application submission. If you possess your certificate of registration by the State of California as a Professional Engineer, consider applying at the III-level.
As a Climate and Resiliency Engineer in Sonoma Water's Engineering and Resources Planning Division, you will be a part of a forward-thinking, solutions-oriented team which is actively engaged in developing and implementing plans and policies to enhance the resilience of Sonoma Water’s infrastructure systems for water supply, wastewater management, flood control, and energy production. This Engineering position supports Sonoma Water’s Energy Policy, Climate Adaptation Plan, and various other programmatic plans and initiatives related to the operational resilience of infrastructure systems. Key responsibilities include performing condition assessments and alternative engineering feasibility evaluations, as well as developing preliminary and detailed engineering designs to ensure infrastructure systems and the natural and working lands can continue to be resilient to the effects of climate change, other natural hazards, evolving service conditions, and aging infrastructure. Additionally, this position assists in ensuring activities from other divisions address climate risks and other known hazard and operational vulnerabilities in their designs.
In this role, the Climate and Resiliency Engineer can expect to collaborate with internal staff and external partners, direct work and train subordinate staff, and may conduct field investigations at pump stations, treatment plants, water storage facilities, groundwater recharge basins, and other related sites.
The ideal Climate and Resiliency Engineer will be passionate about taking action to mitigate impacts to the environment and adapt to the inevitable changes to the environment. Additionally, the candidate will possess:
- Education and experience in addressing climate impacts to watershed, water supply, sanitation, and flood control systems
- Some experience with hydrologic and/or hydraulic modeling
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to address engineering challenges
- Capabilities to synthesize data and correlate information across multiple platforms
- Strong communication skills, including presenting and public speaking
- The ability to be a self-starter who can work effectively on a team and independently
