The Department of Civil Engineering Technology Environmental Management and Safety (CETEMS) at Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for the position of Department Chair.
The successful candidate will have academic and management preparation with professional experience in one or more of the following or related areas: civil engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, or environmental, health and safety management and environmental sustainability. The selected candidate must qualify for tenure at the academic rank of Professor.

The department chair is expected to lead departmental faculty and staff with excellent strategic, organizational and communication skills capable of garnering support for a common vision. The individual will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a collaborative, welcoming, engaging, and productive work and learning environment based on continuous improvement and the vision, mission, goals and values of the university, college and the department.
Strategically lead the academic department in research/scholarship, curriculum innovation, faculty, staff and student recruitment, development and retention, teaching, service on department, college and university committees, and engaging with professional and technical industry organizations for the benefit of students and the department.
Provide outstanding academic and scholarly leadership, organizational management, mentorship, guidance, and fiscal prudence for the success of the department, through strong, open, transparent and regular communication.
Articulate a clear vision for the future of the department to build upon the recognized strengths of the department and faculty, promote scholarly initiatives, facilitate internal and external research and scholarly collaborations, and lead and implement innovative curriculum development.
Foster corporate and alumni relations, demonstrate strong commitment to our experiential learning model, promote new and increased funding opportunities through research and advancement, and grow and advance the department’s reputation, capacity and overall excellence.
Promote excellence in teaching, with a commitment to high quality, student-centered teaching, career-oriented programs and advance education programs with a balance between undergraduate and graduate programming.
Innovate, manage and advance the curriculum, including development of on-site and alternative delivery, continuous improvement of teaching quality and assessment of student learning outcomes.
Oversee and/or manage facilities, national and international collaborations, industry partnerships, cooperative education opportunities, and student recruitment.
Implement CET and RIT policies including strategic plan initiatives including but not limited to enrollment, persistence, on-time graduation, and inclusive excellence goals.
Earned doctorate in a field of engineering/engineering technology, environmental technology/management/science or related field; or an earned doctorate in STEM education or similar with a master’s degree in engineering/engineering technology, environmental technology/management/science or related field.
Approximately five or more years of demonstrated leadership that includes:
Direct management experience interpreting and implementing policies and practices, and engaging in problem solving
Operational budget responsibility
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the growth of programs towards operational success
Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
Record of scholarship in applied research through publications and funded research in the candidate’s field of expertise.
Demonstrated ability to develop and support faculty in their pursuit of a focused and cohesive scholarship agenda related to their disciplines.
Professional experience related to the department.
Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.

CETEMS has 15 full-time faculty (9 tenured, 2 pre-tenure, and 4 non-tenure track) many of whom hold professional licenses or certifications. With over 350 students, the department continues to grow, offering two BS degrees (Civil Engineering Technology and Environmental Sustainability Health and Safety, two on-line MS degrees (Construction Management and Environmental Health and Safety Management) and a combined B.S./M.S. in Environmental Sustainability, Health and Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety Management.
The Civil Engineering Technology BS degree prepares students to enter careers in construction management and civil engineering. The curriculum uses a combination of challenging academics, hands-on laboratory experiences, and practical cooperative work education to cultivate students who use applications-oriented approaches to solve problems.
